Any time is a good time to donate to and/or become a member of the OTW. But everyone who gives $10 or more before October 17 can vote in next month's elections, so right now would be an especially good time.

I had been a member before but managed not to keep up on anything; I should get more involved somehow...

Hurrah!

It's a pretty huge organization. I've been a volunteer for about half a year, but I still don't manage to keep up :D There's a tag wrangling open house chat today (Saturday), and the other teams do these open house chats sometimes, too. They usually get announced on the OTW blog. If you want to know anything about translation, that's my corner, so I may be able to answer a few questions. There's always plenty to do no matter where your interests lie, is my impression.

Well, I don't think I'd be any use at translation (I can only kind of do Japanese text to English and am largely kidding myself about that), don't know any programming beyond basic HTML, but I have done forum moderation before. They could find a use for me, you think?

You could always volunteer to be on the Abuse Committee next year. That just requires the usual moderator-y stuff: keep your trap shut about confidential things, know what the TOS say, don't play favorites, yadda yadda.

Most of the committees and volunteer pools either don't require specific skills or are happy to train you. There are a couple like Legal that are a little different, but most of these are overjoyed to see anybody interested in taking on thankless tasks fascinating and important work. ;)

Tag wrangling and testing are probably the easiest to drop in and out of without making some huge, long-term commitment though.
