I don't see anything strange in combining business with pleasure either. Commodification can be a force for good for fandom, and I wish we'd try it more often (the long-winded version of my thoughts on yaoi commodification is here). Judging by the whole setup of Jacky Abromitis' business, though, I believe she's being very disingenuous and trying to benefit only herself, not fandom as a whole. I believe that what she's doing can only harm fanwork commodification in the long run. That's what rubs me the wrong way, and why I personally don't want to acknowledge her as a fellow fan. If she were trying to commodify fanworks with the aim of benefiting other fans, I'd be cheering her on. She isn't though, and I doubt she ever meant to (hence my reference to her launching her company around the same time as she says her fannish involvement began). Granted, I wasn't there when she launched her first site in 2003 and I may be misinterpreting the motivations she had at the time. But given what we're seeing now, I don't really see a reason to give Fanfic.me the benefit of the doubt. Others may interpret this whole thing differently, I get that, and I wish I hadn't let my personal fannish background come through as clearly as it did when I first wrote about the fannishness of the Fanfic.me people.
Tl;dr'ing again, sorry. One day I will learn to make a point in two sentences or less.
