Jacky Abromitis provides some details about her fannish likes here and there, for instance at that last link. But I can't find any evidence of her having been active in any sort of fan community

I'm not quite sure how you come to that conclusion. A quick search shows her as the webmaster of the L-Word fansite (http://web.archive.org/web/20050205023516/http://www.l-word.com/about.php) all the way back to 2005. Also, in this L-Word fansite interview with Sharon Bowers (http://www.l-word.com/news/sharon_interview_1.php) (one of the BNF Xena authors who became a femslash multifandom BNF instead of just going the way of profic like most of the other Xena BNF authors - although she also went the way of profic and I'm really happy to own a copy of Lucifer Rising *g*) it says: "Many visitors to this site know a bit about how it was conceived through either the special features story on the L word Season 2 DVD or through our Second Anniversary retrospective. It was season 7 of ER that sent me looking for what I now know as a “fan sites” and it was fan fiction that made the lack of air time for “Kim and Kerry” tolerable. Here is a new piece of our “story”... We are absolutely delighted to be publishing in our Fan Fiction Archive the stories that lead me to fall in love with fan fiction. It is these stories that lead to development of both of our fan fiction collections and the software that powers them. Sharon Bowers is a writer of fabulous intelligent, character insight, and creativity. Her Kim/Kerry/Abby series, Ten Degrees of Separation, is one of the best pieces of writing—fan fiction or not—anywhere. Whether you’re an ER fan or not, read these pieces for what they are: fabulously crafted fiction."

That sounds a lot like someone coming from the Kim/Kerry part of fandom and Kim/Kerry was an incredibly huge femslash pairing at the time, although no media fandom people except the femslash fans were interested in ER. If AfterEllen.com asked her for her opinion in an article, it's likely because she has fannish street cred in femslash circles.
