Oh, hey, and chiming in (unnecessarily) to say that "ship fics" strikes me as one of those really, really variable and fandom-specific terms. "Shippy" often means subtexty for that main will-they-won't-they het pairing the general show fanbase wants to get together. I imagine the same thing is true for main f/f pairings in shows with canon lesbian couples or two main women the fanbase cares about to the exclusion of all else. There's definitely a different dynamic in those kinds of fandoms, both the lesbian variety and the Moonlighting pairing variety, from the most common strains of... what the hell do I call it... inherently multi-fandom, anti-OTP, m/m slash and threesome-friendly journal fandom. Not that everybody likes m/m slash or never has OTPs, but there's something different about a fanbase of a pairing, especially when that pairing is canon or almost canon or might be canon, and it's the main focus of the fandom, not one of a gazillion rival pairings. All of the terms like 'ship' get used lots of ways, but I think there are two dominant styles of use that correspond to very, very multi-pairing concepts of "fandom" and to very, very OTP-centric (and canon-centric) concepts of "fandom".
